Country Style Christmas Decorating
It seems to me that Christmas decorating shouldn’t be approached any differently than decorating at any other time of year.
For instance, if you are normally an informal decorator, such as with the country decorating style, come December 1st, you wouldn’t all of the sudden, begin adorning your home in shiny silver and gold. It just wouldn’t feel natural for you or your guests, who are accustomed to your usual warm and cozy country decorating style.
Most likely, you don’t even have the natural instinct to choose formal decorations for your Christmas décor, but don’t get tempted by the many different styles of Christmas decorations you’ll see in the department stores or in magazine photos. The key is to keep continuity in your decorating style, even for the most festive time of year.
Choose fabrics and patterns in muted tones of the traditional red and green - go with burgundy and hunter green. Chances are, they will blend in nicely with your home’s color scheme and feel.
Develop a festive flair with natural looking greenery. If you don’t have the time, or natural artistic tendencies, you can purchase garland or wreaths at the store. Certain types of store bought greenery have a more realistic, country look than others. Try to stay away from that shiny garland - this type of garland will not look natural in your country home.
Homemade decorations, like garland strung with popcorn and cranberries for your Christmas tree, or country style Christmas decorations that have a homemade look, will flow nicely with your regular decorating style and help to create decorative harmony in your home.
The most we have done in our home, in the homemade area, for Christmas decorating is making a wreath for our front door. Almost always, when you bring home your Christmas tree, you have to trim the boughs at the bottom. We simply save those branches and use them to make our front door wreath.
All that you need to be purchase to make a wreath like this is a metal wreath (to wrap your branches around), a ready-made bow, (or ribbon, if you are a good bow tier) and a couple of small wooden ornaments. If you prefer, you can pick up some pinecones from outside and use them instead of wooden ornaments, or use a little of both! The possibilities are endless. Your ornaments can be attached using a hot glue gun or wire. After pricing a lot of the fresh pine wreaths, this is also a much less expensive way to go.
