Decorating With Patterns For An Interesting Look

Just as choosing a rich color for your walls, decorating with patterns can also be an intimidating process.

Trying to find the right pillows to match your sofa or making the decision for a solid color accent chair instead of a print, can create a bit of a dilemma for most.

For me, personally, I would always look at decorating photos in magazines and wonder how the decorator ever thought to put "those particular prints together".

I have found, however, that there are a few basic ideas that you can follow that are aimed at a do-it-yourself decorator.

These ideas are simple to follow and can help you obtain success in decorating with patterns.

1. When decorating with patterns or coordinating patterns and colors in a room, be sure to use swatches. As hard as you try, it is virtually impossible to successfully match a color or pattern soley by memory.

Bring a scrap of wallpaper or wallpaper border, piece of fabric, a pillow or cushion, or a paint sample with you.

With the technology of today and the convenience of digital cameras, you can also easily get a picture of your room to bring with you when making a pattern or color decision.

2. Use a similar color in each pattern you choose. For example, if burgundy is the dominating color of choice in your room, you'll want to be sure that burgundy is in any additional pattern or print that you incorporate.

3. Do not use two patterns that are similar to each other. For instance, you wouldn't want to have two large floral patterns with similar colors near each other.

4. Use a mixture of patterns. Combine florals, plaids, checks and stripes. Incorporate at least 3 patterns, many times a room can handle up to 7 patterns.

5. Use contrasting pattern sizes. When using a LARGE plaid, add a fabric with a SMALL floral pattern.

Try not to be intimidated when decorating with patterns. It is essential to the decorating process because it can turn a bland room into a warm and interesting gathering space.
